Have you ever watched Monk? It was my little brother’s favorite, and every time I sit down to lesson plan or write a post, I am reminded of his saying, “It’s a gift, and a curse.”
So per the usual, I sat on my comfy chaise with a cute notebook and a six pack of flair pens, and got to work. And by work, I mean doodling. Quick lettering. Bright colors. I flopped down to the floor. More doodling. Drew some flowers. Something sparks. Jot a note. Doodle some more. A gift, and a curse.
That’s me in a nutshell. I’m that teacher that can’t sit through the faculty meeting or the professional development without leaving with an intricately designed notebook. But that also means that I’m that teacher who can relate to my artsy students, my students who lack focus, my students whose talents do not match with the ability to take the test. Oddly enough, I’m also Type A. I need everything organized in lists, bullet points, color coded. A gift, and a curse.
Are you like me too? Teachers are such a rare, special blend of creativity, caring and organization. It might take us twice as long to plan a lesson, or write a blog post. But on the flip side, we get to engage students in something new, interesting, and exciting. So if you’re a creative teacher, the one who can’t get by without doodled flowers, please embrace it. Channel it. Make lists. Set time limits and goals, so you still get your work done. And if you’re that organized teacher, maybe check on us creative folks.
Let’s get to know each other better! Tell me in the comments what kind of teacher you are!
